A computer is defined as an electronic device that operates under some instructions, often referred to as programs, apps, or software.

So, if you are wondering if a device you own can be defined as a computer, here are some functions of a computer to help you figure out how to identify a computer. Computers are able to:
- Accept: Take in information. This happens when we type information into the computer, scan pictures, or even make voice recordings.
- Produce or output: Make information available to the user. The computer does this by allowing us to print available information, display information on-screen, play music stored on the system, etc.
- Store: Save information for later use. We do this by keeping information on our devices, flash drives, memory cards, etc.
- Manipulate data or information: Change the information into a different format. E.g., Adding numbers together and returning the total, changing numbers to a graph, etc.

The term PC came into use many years ago when the first set of computers was designed to be used by a single individual. The abbreviation PC means Personal Computer, and today, the term PC is widely used to refer to any computer that is designed to be used by a single user.
